Chornobyl Catastrophe Shelter No Longer Effectively Blocks Radiation, Requires Significant Restoration – IAEA

A containment structure encasing the Chernobyl nuclear reactor within Ukraine can no longer perform its main function of containing radioactive material, according to the IAEA. This loss of function comes after a drone attack in February that caused significant damage in the protective shell.

Damage from Drone Strike Degrades Safety Structure

A drone strike in February severely damaged the multibillion-euro “new safe confinement” arch. This enormous protective structure, constructed for €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was intended to contain radiation over the long term. An IAEA assessment mission confirmed that the strike had weakened the integrity of the steel confinement.

The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, said IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that the mission confirmed no permanent damage to its load-bearing structures or sensor systems.
