Hardline Ex- Legislator José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile's Next Head of State.

In a decisive runoff election, far-right politician José Antonio Kast has clinched the top job in Chile.

A Resounding Triumph

After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.

This signifies Kast's third presidency, having earlier been lost by the incumbent president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.

Campaign Built On Law and Order and Immigration

Noted for his strong Catholic views and regard for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was primarily built on promises to combat increasing violence and drastically reduce migration.

He consistently blamed migrants, especially the approximately 330,000 undocumented individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the election cycle, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the inauguration or face deportation.

His plans included U.S.-style measures such as erecting detention centers, high walls, electric fences, and bolstering the army presence on the northernmost frontier.

Part of a Broader Wave

Several observers view Kast's win as fitting into a wider rightward trend in South America, following recent political wins in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

However, other pundits also frame it as a continuation of the predictable alternation of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Leading Without a Strong Majority

In spite of his clear electoral win, Kast does not command an overall majority in the legislature, not in the lower house or the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are combined together.

This political situation might complicate his policy goals, such as a pledge to slash public spending by billions within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to offered concrete steps.

"There are numerous aspects about what a Kast administration will be that are uncertain because he has not explained how he will achieve them," said a political professor.

The professor continued, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is highly probable we will see spending cuts common for the right. However where there is considerably less ambiguity is on public safety, because that has been his central theme throughout the race."
