Information Available Regarding the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
At least 16 people perished and in excess of 40 were hurt when assailants shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack local authorities are describing as a act of terrorism.
As of the newest reports, officials have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to medical facilities.
Those who died have not yet been formally identified, but authorities state their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who are known to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, the Foreign Minister said that France shared the grief of his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
An Israeli citizen was among those killed in the incident, as per reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with a number in serious condition. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.
A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a hero, he received gunshot wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Sources state he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He said he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
