Israeli citizens observe second anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza peace negotiations advance
People have come together throughout the country to mark two years since the Hamas-initiated attack on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in Egypt over an end to the war in Gaza.
The assault led to more than 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.
Israel reacted by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed more than 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the objectives of the war: the release of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas government and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer create a threat to Israel".
Memorial Events Across Israel
The Israeli government rescheduled state memorials until 16 October - after the end of the festive season - but events still were held around the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the relatives of Israelis who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.
Peace Discussions in Egypt
Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the North African tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a follow-up session of third-party negotiations to discuss the provisions of the agreement.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations indicated that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The source explained the morning session finished without concrete outcomes, due to differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not resume fighting after the opening period of the arrangement.
He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to produce any major advancement," but mentioned that facilitators are striving to close the differences between the conflicting groups.
Essential Points in Negotiations
- A permanent truce
- The exchange of the captives still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Arrangements for assistance distribution
- After-conflict governance of the area
Public Feeling
In Tel Aviv's memorial area that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose sibling endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas gunmen - explained: "No place feels like home any longer and until every captive return not a single person will feel safe."
"When we see everybody home again, we can relax again. Then we can start to recover," she continued.
Near the leader's residence in the capital, people assembled to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in confinement in Gaza, 20 of whom are considered to be surviving.
Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "We must do any agreement required for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israeli citizens prefer the hostilities to end in exchange for the release of the captives.
Palestinian Situation
At the location of the gathering, mourners came together to remember the victims.
From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and explosions could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the intense Israeli bombardment carried on.
In Gaza City, air and artillery strikes were noted in the morning of that day in the western neighborhood, area and Nasr areas and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well the camp to the north-west.
"As the dusk arrives, the anxiety arrives with it," displaced urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, shared.
"Me and my three children are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are lying together, embracing, especially my little child who places his face on me all night."
"Constantly we look at the reports to see what happened. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
Health Crisis
The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the corpses of six people by the daytime, including several who lost their lives in an Israeli attack in the south part al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Nasser hospital in the southern city of the city said two more fatalities had been brought there. An individual was killed by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the southern area, health workers stated.
