After enduring torrential rains that caused flooding across areas in the city, the City of Angels is now seeing unusually warm weather for the end of February.
All-Time High Heat
During the day Friday, the temperature climbed to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in central LA, as reported by meteorologists. This breaks the previous daily record for February 27th, which was eighty-eight degrees Fahrenheit and was set in the previous year.
"Unusually high temperatures" were labeled on official maps for the region.
Safety Warnings
Authorities issued a warning that Friday's conditions posed an "higher threat for heat illness" for those at risk. Their advice included:
- Keeping well-hydrated.
- Avoiding outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a hot car.
A Sharp Weather Swing
This sharp rise in heat follows closely after a intense storm system that pummeled the region recently. That system delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to higher elevations, leading to evacuation orders for millions residents.
Unfortunately, the storm also caused a massive avalanche in the Lake Tahoe area, which resulted in nine fatalities.
Forecast Ahead
Forecasters predict a cooldown is expected. Temperatures were expected to fall to around sixty-one degrees Fahrenheit in downtown LA by Friday night.
Other locales that experienced ninety degrees featured Long Beach, Burbank, and Woodland Hills. Elsewhere, Oxnard, Westwood, Camarillo, and Santa Maria were expected to experience the high eighties.
In the coming days, downtown LA can see readings in the eighties, with mid-70s temperatures expected for the following week.
