The acclaimed police drama AC-12 is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-part series created by Jed Mercurio will begin filming in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The last series wrapped up in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Adrian Dunbar's part remain tasked to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a offender.

However, his case might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still active in the shadows, plot details suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had so many followers track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".

"Beyond the show's success but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and get the team back together," he added.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

Line of Duty launched in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, attracting notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.

Broadcasters haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The conclusion of series six drew the long-running storyline about the search for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team said at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the corporation confirmed on this week that a new season is now being produced.
