The most severe projected effects of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by scientists, including a scorching 4C jump in average temperatures to a two-metre rise in sea levels. Another scenario predicts a plunge of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset food production and energy demand.

Credible Outcomes, Not Guarantees

These impacts, some of which are associated with critical climate thresholds, are considered as low probability but possible. The team explained that these scenarios plugged a hole in risk assessment that had rendered the UK not ready for extreme outcomes.

"The worst-case scenarios we have outlined are not forecasts, but they are plausible," commented Nigel Arnell who directed the analysis. "Britain has been making preparations in the absence of the frameworks to test against extreme possibilities. We've now given planners what they need to get ready for future conditions they pray never occur, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Suite of Extreme Weather Possibilities

A further series of worst-case scenarios details the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that temperatures could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C higher than the norm, while rainfall could be triple normal levels.

The chance of the extreme scenarios coming to pass cannot be precisely determined due to a lack of certainty about what steps will be enacted to address global heating and how the Earth's systems will respond. This approach was described as similar to defence planning or stress tests for economic stability.

Major Possibility Details

• Severe Heating: Global temperatures exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if emissions cuts fails or if vicious cycles including the Amazon basin perishing emit its huge repository of carbon. This would lead to extreme and prolonged heatwaves and droughts plaguing the UK in summer.
• Atlantic Current Collapse: A major ocean current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is weakening and showing signs of collapse due to ocean warming. A collapse starting around 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Agriculture would face immense difficulties and water resources would be completely altered," said the professor.
• Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could happen if glaciers in the polar regions disintegrate quickly, flooding seaside communities. Unlike the other scenarios, this risk is already understood by coastal engineers.
• Aerosol Effect: Global averages could also be increased by about 0.75C if industrial aerosols is sharply cut. This unexpected result occurs because tiny specks from fossil fuel combustion block sunlight from reaching the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Extreme

The severe models could be applied to guide the building of long-term infrastructure, such as expanded cities, nuclear power stations and water management networks. Knowledge about these future hazards could also hasten the push to cut carbon pollution.

The research developed the extreme models using a blend of real-world events, computer simulations and established principles. The possibilities exclude broader worldwide issues such as the agricultural collapse and increased conflict.

This work was requested as part of a national adaptation planning initiative. Previous assessments have stated that insufficient focus was being allocated to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.

Official experts has said that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the threats for four degrees. Earlier government strategies have been labeled being "very weak" by some observers.

A government spokesperson said: "Climate change is at the core of our national priorities, both adapting for the future and transitioning to a low-carbon economy. It is crucial that the UK is ready for the impacts."
