Mount Mahameru Eruption in the Southeast Asian nation Triggers Emergency Relocations

The nation's Mount Semeru, the highest peak on Java island, has exploded, covering several villages with volcanic ash, leading to evacuations and causing officials to elevate the alert to the highest level.

The volcano in East Java province released blistering plumes of hot ash and a mixture of rock, lava and gas that travelled up to 4 miles down its sides several times from midday to dusk, while a thick column of fiery clouds rose 1.2 miles into the air, as stated by Indonesia’s Geology Agency.

The outbursts that unfolded throughout the day forced officials to increase the mountain's warning status twice, from the level three to the highest, the authority reported. No deaths or injuries have been reported.

More than 300 residents in the three communities most endangered in the district of Lumajang region were relocated to government shelters, as mentioned by a representative for the national emergency management body.

He stated that heightened volcanic movements of the mountain on Wednesday afternoon led authorities to expand the danger zone to 8km from the crater. Residents were urged to stay clear from an area along the Kobokan River, which is the route of the lava flow, as searing gas moved down Semeru’s slopes.

Videos on online platforms showed a dense cloud of volcanic dust moving through a wooded ravine to a waterway beneath a overpass. Locals, some with faces smeared with ash and water, escaped to temporary shelters or left for alternative secure locations.

Local media indicated that emergency teams were facing challenges to rescue about 178 people stranded on the 3,676-metre mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The group included 137 hikers, 15 carriers, seven guides and six tourism officials, according to an spokesperson with the protected area.

“They are currently safe at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” an official stated in a video statement. He said the station was situated 4.5km from the summit on the northern slope of the mountain, which is outside the trajectory of the fiery cloud movement that was seen moving to the south-southeast. Bad weather and rain required the team to remain overnight there, he explained.

The volcano, also known as Mahameru, has burst many occasions in the last two centuries. Still, as is the situation with many of the 129 active volcanoes in the archipelago, thousands of residents still to live on its productive highlands.
