New York Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Incident

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during their recent conversation.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn commented. “His wife and his kid, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.

“Still unsure,” he added. “But I will say this, just talking to him, he seemed very positive. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was singled out. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between Madison Square Garden and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, as reported. The perpetrator got away.

Glenn said Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a newborn.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and my priority is his well-being. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd was inactive in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad all season long while healing from his surgery.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
