Red Cross Assists Hamas in Search for Remains of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official confirmed that its representatives accompanied members of Hamas into areas of Gaza currently controlled by Israeli military control to support the hunt for the bodies of individuals held captive.

Truce Terms and Captive Bodies Return

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which took effect on October 10, Hamas is obligated to hand over the bodies of all captives promptly. As a reciprocal measure, the Israeli government has agreed to transfer 15 Palestinian bodies for every Israeli body returned.

Hamas has so far returned the remains of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the last five days, as some of those remains are thought to be in locations past the ceasefire boundary marking the temporary truce line.

Red Cross Role as Impartial Facilitator

“Upon the appeal of the parties, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) accompanied a party to the conflict as the party looked for the remains of the deceased individuals beyond the IDF-designated ‘yellow boundary’,” said a spokesperson for the committee.

She continued: “The parties to the hostilities determined the procedures of the operation and delegated the Red Cross to act as a neutral intermediary. We was had no part in the discussions.”

The official additionally explained: “Our team was did not participate in the physical hunt for the deceased nor does it engage in the physical recovery of human remains.”

According to international humanitarian law, it is the responsibility of the sides involved in a conflict to search for, collect, and retrieve human remains.

US Ultimatum and Local Recovery Operations

On Saturday, the American leader issued a 48-hour demand to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to start handing over the remains of the deceased hostages, including American citizens, promptly, or the additional nations participating in this significant truce will take action,” he wrote on his social‑media platform.

When the two-day window approached, the group, joined by the Red Cross, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were authorised by Israeli authorities to look for remains beyond the line indicating the Israeli military’s pullback inside the territory. An official representative said the Egyptian team would use heavy machinery and trucks in the search.

This development was supported by an unnamed Israeli official, who told local press that members of the group had been allowed to enter areas of the region under Israel Defense Forces (IDF) control to look for the bodies of captives, together with Egypt’s and Red Cross teams.

“To achieve this goal, representatives were permitted to cross the yellow line,” the source was cited as saying.

Footage released by a media outlet appeared to show individuals of a specialized group – belonging to the group’s military wing responsible for holding hostages – accompanying a Red Cross vehicle in a specific location close to a southern city, which lies outside IDF jurisdiction.

Difficulties in Locating Captive Bodies

Efforts to locate for the remains of Israeli hostages has turned into one of the most delicate matters in the ceasefire agreed between the parties. Yet, the attempt to locate the remains has been difficult from the outset, given the presence of an approximate enormous amount of rubble across the territory, where, as per health officials, at least 10,000 residents are listed as unaccounted for, buried under the debris.
