Snap Benefits Uncertain as Judges Urge White House to Fund Nutrition Assistance
Over 42 million Americans are anxiously awaiting to hear if the Trump administration will use emergency funding to supply billions in food aid.
Federal courts issued the Trump administration until Monday noon Eastern Time (17:00 GMT) to give updates about how it intends to fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known as food assistance.
Funding for the program is still uncertain due to the more-than-month-long federal closure caused by the failure of Congress to agree on a budget agreement.
Despite the court decision or alternative solution, countless citizens have gone without essential food assistance since money for the program expired on the weekend.
Local Management and Federal Funding
Although state governments manage the assistance, the initiative relies on money from the national administration, which has been unfunded and shut down since October 1st.
Courts in two northeastern states ruled that the USDA needs to employ $5.25bn (four billion pounds) in emergency funds to provide some funding to Americans on Snap.
The program requires about $8bn each month.

US President Donald Trump earlier stated he had directed administration attorneys to inquire with the judiciary how the administration could legally finance food stamps, stating: "Although we get prompt direction, it will sadly be postponed."
On Sunday, the Treasury Secretary said in a television appearance that the commander-in-chief wanted to receive guidance from the courts about how to reallocate funds lawfully to fund assistance disbursements but they could go out as soon as Wednesday.
"There's a process that has to be followed," the Secretary said. "Therefore, we've got to determine what the process is."
Recently, the Department of Agriculture said it will stop providing food assistance funds starting November 1st because of the federal closure, stating: "Resources are exhausted."
Legal Actions and Local Reactions
Numerous states and the Washington DC filed suit against the administration over the food-aid freeze and contended that they have a legal obligation to maintain the initiative in their areas.
Separately, municipalities and charitable organizations also filed a lawsuit.
With uncertainty surrounding federal Snap funding, some states said they would employ their own money to fund Snap benefits.
