Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

Price's death comes less than a month after he debuted his newest line in London, his first in more than 30 years. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the notorious black velvet "dress" made famous by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener looks from supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the wedding dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Partnerships with Stars

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to blend tailoring for all genders along with his technical proficiency in designing sculptural silhouettes established him as a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Defined Shapes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a genuine innovator whose legacy on the visual landscape of music remains deeply ingrained.
