The Latest Casual Game Mode Sparks Intense Debates Over AI Players, Experience Points, and Wait Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a new playlist called Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this option resembles the regular Breakthrough format but includes a few key changes:
- Every squad has just 8 human participants, with the rest filled by 32 bots.
- Actions performed by human gamers grant complete experience points, while AI activities offer lower rewards.
- Only two locations can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Player tags, achievements, and stat tracking have been turned off.
So essentially, the playlist delivers on its name: it offers a casual take of Breakthrough. On the surface, one could assume it's a good idea, since it provides more options for gamers looking for different ways to enjoy the title. But, gaming history have taught us anything, it is that you can't please everyone. Which is to say, a lot of BF6 players are mad.
Player Responses: Anger to Praise
"People want human opponents. Avoid making the errors of your competitors," reads a response to the official announcement. "Truly disappointing idea," says another. At the same time, in community forums, a player remarks, "I have no idea where we are headed with this game," and another lists all the issues they believe to be broken in the game: "Resolve glitches, address drone issues, correct rocket mechanics, adjust aiming after sprinting, improve hit detection. We don't need this bot mode."
However, amid the criticism, there are players sharing how much they're enjoying the new mode. "It's enjoyable to warm up, human participants keep it from being a total farmfest but it's quite laid-back," reads one Reddit comment. "The community doesn't understand that there are gamers who actually go outside and can't play this title all the time. Let them find a middle ground," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter explains that as they're "a battledad with limited time, this is great for me," while another applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Constructive Criticisms and Player Feedback
All that said, players have valid points to complain about the new mode. A few folks have pointed out that it could increase wait times more extended for different playlists due to the sheer number of playlists currently available. Similarly, certain regions often face AI-filled matches in the current modes. It also seems somewhat counterintuitive that the mode does not begin without a required amount of real players, even though it focuses mostly on combat against bots.
Finally, a major grievances is that a previous feature was meant to offer full XP, even against bots, but that got canned when they tried to eliminate bot farms from the mode. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the community compromising in the middle, as per forum feedback. Another describes this mode as the developers "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced great enjoyment in the first couple of days, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Looking Ahead: Will Changes Be Made?
Should the development team has demonstrated something so far with Battlefield 6, it's that they're paying attention and responding to feedback. Assignments being too difficult were adjusted rapidly, just like the specific battle pass objectives. Chances are that, should analytics indicates this recent mode is underperforming to their expectations, they will not hesitate to make further modifications.
