UK and French Warplanes Target Subterranean Islamic State Arms Depot in the Syrian Desert
In a coordinated military action, British and French warplanes have targeted an below-ground site in Syria previously used by Islamic State.
Details of the Joint Strike
The strike was conducted on Saturday night in a rugged, mountainous area close to the archaeological site of the city of Palmyra.
Guided bombs were used to target and destroy the underground passages leading to the location.
“Preliminary assessments show the objective was engaged successfully,” declared a official communiqué.
Forces Deployed
Eurofighter Typhoon warplanes carried out the attack, supported by a Voyager fuel tanker to allow for longer missions.
Suspected Use of the Site
The subterranean complex is thought to have been employed as the storage of weapons and explosives.
Authorities indicated the adjacent region was absent of civilians at the time of the strike.

The Defence Secretary emphasized the government's commitment to work closely together with key allies” in order to prevent any comeback” of Islamic State.

Coalition warplanes have been conducting regular patrols over parts of the region to prevent a possible return of the Islamist militant group that previously ruled significant territory in the nation until 2019.
