UN:Me: An Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Among Us Mechanics

The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.

"It's a unique game where a girl containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can seize control at will, releasing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a abandoned church.

An Environment of Personal Horror

"What are you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."

The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."

After a player have deduced a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can lie or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
